Thank you for such an awesome series of videos. I think I’ve learned more in those 30 minutes than in five years of lifting. My question is: Is there anything in particular about the set-up or technique that changes to accommodate taller, longer-limbed lifters, specifically wide receiver-type builds?

Once again awesome series and look forward to more knowledge we can all spread. Thanks for your years of training and the amazing ability to analize, scrutinize, and develop your different training techniques. You are truly an inspiration.
Thank you Dave for this fantastic series. Really liked the attention to detail, yet it was explained well so that any level lifter could understand. Awesome job, would love to see a deadlift series in the future too.

Thanks a ton Dave, you have done a shitload for the sport and for many many lifters you will never meet, but that will always appreciate what you have done for them. This was a great idea (the video series) and I feel much more solid in my set-ups because of it. Your advice on warm-ups was also a huge help with all of my Big 3.
Thanks again.

Dave I really enjoyed the article you broke benching down into the simplest form. I have an uneven lock out problem with my right arm, I’ve always been able to lock weight out easy with the left arm but my right has to struggle to finish the lift. My right arm becomes less tucked and flares out but i cant seem to prevent this no matter what I do. I’m 6ft 190 lbs. and use the feet tucked far back and high arch setup. My left arm benches 315 easily but the right arm wont cooperate, please explain why I suck? lol

This series is some of the best info ever put out by EFS! My advice is if you do one for the squat or pull make it a DVD and charge for it. Giving stuff like this away in this age is insane.

Dave, or whoever will be answering this post,
Firts off thank-you for continuously providing an amazing resource.
I noticed that in the form described in the video that the feet are on the balls. The question I have is that if your feet must be flat on the floor when benching (“feet must be flat on the floor (as flat as the shape of the shoe will allow).” according to IPL rules) how would the form change with that?
Thanks,
From an inexpeirenced lifter who has yet to go to a meet.

Hail to you from Russia and all your work!
I’m 6′ 4 , so can you make a video how technique changes with longer arms and legs
and with the rules of my federation feet must be flat on the floor
Can you please analyse the bench in episode 5 intro and Ryan Kennelly raw bench press
Thank you for your work!

Dave this series was great. I am 6’4″ with a roughly 80″ wingspan and would love to see a taller, longer lifter bench. I have reduced the stress in my shoulders (arthiritis) by maintaining a proper arch for the first time ever. I think this video will really help solve my leg drive problems though. The knee lower than the hip is a priceless piece of advice. I am benching on Thursday and will definitely give this a thorough workout. Thanks again Dave, as always your company is a gift to this community.

Killer series, I have incorporated these ideas into my set-up and put an emphasis on spending a good amount of time setting up for the set and have already felt improvements.
+1 on Squat, Deadlift, Overhead Press and whatever else tickles the pickle. Maybe a pull-up series?

Two questions still:
1) How do you create lateral tightness? I am sure that if you pushed on my body towards the floor or in line with the bench I would not move, but I am not sure if I am laterally tight. What are good indicators of lateral tightness without a partner?
2) My butt keeps coming up off the bench when I press the weight, but not for the usual reasons. I keep my feet under my body with the feet flat on the floor. The problem is that I can’t seem to get a huge arch without putting a large amount of my weight on my butt, then leg drive pushes my butt off the bench. How to fix this?
Alex

I am a beginning lifter and this series definitely has helped me with my bench. From watching this I changed my technique to match that in the video and that in turn increased my max by a good amount. I used to just lie on the bench and start pressin but this has changed my entire attitude towards the bench. Focousing on back arch, grip, leg drive and overall body stiffness I feel better getting off the bench then I did before I started.
Would really like to see a video for squatting and deadlifting and anything else that will help me get huge.

Dave I got what I needed out of the video series now I have a new question. What size is the sweatshirt your wearing. Im serious, I love your clothing and have alot of it but I have bought 3 elitefts sweatshirts all the way up to XXL and they have all been to small, short sleeves and stops right at my waist. Now im not a real big guy, 6’5″ 235 with long arms. So what size is that sweathsirt

+1 on the longer limbed bencher, I am 6’4 with long ass arms, I have adopted the knees tucked close to bench and feet well under my body approach and have liked it, but as you said when I flex hard and get really tight the ass tends to rise a little,
A tall bastard showing us how to set up and bar paths would be incredible, thanks.

Hope to see a series being done for the deadlift and squat.

I understand there’s a lot of questions being asked here, and I’m not sure if this has been touched on or not, but when the feet are out, you save to drive like you’re trying to push your toes through your shoes. If you have you feet farther back, how do you want to drive through your legs? Do you try to push your heels to the floor or push up from the toes?

Not only is Dave Tate a wealth of knowledge but he’s a great guy and has a great attitude. If anyone can be haughty it would be Dave but that’s the last thing he is anything but. I look forward to what Dave has to say. Its like as a kid if Mickey Mantle were to talk to me, or if Willie Mays took me aside what an honor.
I like what Dave says about training and his facility the people there are there to learn. Reminds me of what the German philosopher Edmund Husserl said about himself and philosophy ” I am a constant beginner”. That is the spirit of all those who love the endeavor they are engaged with have. I , am just a spect of dusk in the grand scheme of things but when I come upon something noteworthy I stop and give pause and give thanks for people such as Dave in the world.

Awesome series, Dave and I would love to see one the deadlift and squat.
The bench series has helped a little bit but I think I’m doing something wrong because my ass is coming off the bench so obviously I’m not as not as tight as I should be. If I keep my ass down, my back becomes loose and I can’t bench as much. If you can help that’d be awesome, until then I’ll keep watching the series.
I also want to know when you’re going to make the monarch T-shirt in 3xl for us fat bastards.

Dave, excellent (should I say “elite”?) video! One question: How much of a difference would the bench height make? I have two benches — one with an 18″ height and the other with a 24″ height. The 24″ bench is a separate piece from the rack I use to hold the weight, while the 18″ bench must be attached to the rack such that its utility isn’t as good. Also, the 24″ bench has greater width, which I find is an aid in helping to attain the tightness you spoke about. I’m about
5 feet 10 inches, and with the 24″ bench I have found myself using an aerobic step underneath my feet to aid in getting tight. The form I have been using is the one recommended by Rippetoe (who emphasizes the back tightness but omits the arch and leg emphasis), but with the help of this very thorough video series I feel confident about trying it your way.
