MAW Annual Holiday Training Manual: Get Strong(er) while Granting a Child’s Wish

A Special Message

If you look at the characteristics of any successful, enduring company or person, they all have a common thread: the ability to change, adjust, and adapt – especially during challenging times. As we approach the holidays and the end of what was a demanding year for all of us, I think back on all that we went through: from drastic changes in the way businesses are run, to the sluggish job market and continued economic pressures – we were all touched in one way or another.

But out of these circumstances came great resolve, determination, and a bonding sense of support for one another. Without question, the past several years made all of us strong(er) individuals. And, for many of us, it also made us more responsive. Whether it was helping to teach or mentor a student, getting someone to become more active, lending an ear, or just being patient – this extra understanding can make a world of difference in a person’s life. Through what we collectively learn at elitefts™, it will always remain our mission to live, learn and pass on. I encourage all of you to do the same.

Therefore, I am once again asking you to support a cause that, together, can make wishes come true for children living with life-threatening medical conditions — The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that Make-A-Wish experiences have on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.

You will never forget any of the children whose lives you touched. In the face of major adversity, we are all reminded that it is these children who show us that life is a gift and love is its substance. They prove to us over and over again, that no circumstance or disease can steal away our extraordinary resolve for joy and wonder.

“When your baby is diagnosed with cancer – life changes. Suddenly you are confronted with the possibility that they won’t have ‘the rest of their lives’ to live out their hopes and dreams. You hope and you pray that they will, but you are also confronted with the frailty of life in a very real way. This is a rambling way of getting to my main point — how in the world do I thank someone who gives her something that I couldn’t? I mean, if she wanted a webkinz, I could and did get that for her. If she wanted pickles (or anything else for that matter!) at 11:30 p.m. in the hospital, her dad could and did do that. But for “Make-A Wish” to give her the opportunity to think of one thing she would love to do in her lifetime and for elitefts™ to offer such a huge donation to make that happen…there just are no words to fully express the gratitude I have for them all. That is crazy love…I can’t think of another way to describe it. Every one of them has a special place in my heart. I will never forget their kindness to a little girl they had not even met when they agreed to give so generously.”

–Mother of a sponsored child

While I do give quite a bit to charity through the company and on my own, I generally do not make these personal gifts public. However, this one is different because it isn’t about me or elitefts™, or combining PRs with charity. This is the one time a year where our readers, writers, sponsors, staff, team and volunteers all pull together for a GREAT cause. This is about what we can do TOGETHER and the difference we can make. Just reading that quote above inspires and encourages me. I have this on my phone daily reading list as a constant reminder of the incredible impact we can have — together. It also reminds me, however, of another quote. This time, from one of my son’s books.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
–Dr. Seuss
