Dave Tate
Founder EliteFTS
Dave Tate is the founder and CEO of EliteFTS, which is staffed by experienced professionals dedicated to providing strength coaches, athletes and trainers with the highest-quality equipment, personalized service and extensive knowledge needed to advance their training programs.
Dave has been involved with powerlifting for more than two and a half decades as a world-class participant, coach and consultant. He has logged more than 10,000 hours of personal training and strength consulting sessions with professional, elite and novice athletes, as well as with professional and university strength coaches. He holds Elite status in powerlifting (in three weight classes) with best lifts of a 935 squat, 740 deadlift, 610 bench press and a 2,205 total.
In addition to remaining active as a participant who still pushes himself to excel, Dave contributes insights and inspiration to the sport that has shaped him. Through Elite Fitness Systems, he has conducted hundreds of influential seminars and clinics nationwide for gyms, training centers, schools and universities. He has written more than 100 articles on strength training for magazines and web sites, including Powerlifting USA, Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health and T-Nation.com. This athlete-entrepreneur earned a Lifetime Achievement award in 2005 from the Society for Weight Training Specialists.
Dave Tate’s impact also extends beyond training techniques and beyond his sport. As a business adviser, motivational speaker and author, he shows how athletic disciplines teach valuable lessons for overall achievement. “We each have all we need to achieve success in anything we choose to do,” says Tate, describing the theme of his 2005 book, Under the Bar / Twelve Lessons of Life from the World of Powerlifting. The Angry Coach
The Angry Coach is the strength coach, and also a positional coach, for a successful high school football program. Since 2001, an impressive number of his players have gone on to play college football, including several at the Division I and I-AA levels and two who have played professionally in the NFL. The Angry Coach has also worked with athletes at the college and professional levels in a variety of disciplines, including football, track and field, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, rowing and mixed martial arts (MMA). For professional reasons, the Angry Coach will not be using his real identity.

Bob Youngs
Elite powerlifter and owner of Southside Barbell in Florida. In 1996, Bob moved to Columbus, Ohio and began training at Westside Barbell. In two years, his total went from 1540 to 2000. He has totaled Elite in the 275lbs class and has totaled 2010. His best lifts are an 840 squat, 540 bench press and a 705 deadlift.

Harry Selkow
Harry was formally the strength and conditioning coach of the Arizona Sundogs (NHL/Central Hockey League) as well as for the Bradshaw Mountain High School football program. Josh Bryant
Josh Bryant is one of the fastest rising names in the fitness industry. He works as a speed, strength and conditioning coach at one of the top high school programs in Texas. Currently Josh is a personal trainer who works successfully with many clients, both in person at Metroflex Gym and via the internet. By using the Joshstrength Method, he has trained world record setting powerlifters, women fitness competitors, Olympic athletes, professional fighters, NCAA champions, and a host of high school athletes who received collegiate scholarships.
As an athlete, he won many national and world titles in both powerlifting and strongman, and at 22 years of age was the youngest person in powerlifting history to bench press 600 pounds raw. He squatted 909 pounds in the USPF, officially bench-pressed 620 pounds raw, and officially deadlifted 810 pounds raw. In 2005, he won the Atlantis Strongest Man in America competition.
Along with ISSA certifications in fitness training, nutrition, and conditioning, Josh has been awarded the prestigious title of Master of Fitness Sciences (MFS). He was also recently named the ISSA Director of Applied Strength and Power. In addition to being certified by the NSCA as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and by NASM as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES), Josh completed his master of sciences degree in exercise science (July 2010). He has been published in numerous magazines, periodicals and websites.

Marc Bartley
Marc is one of the premier 275lbs. lifters in the world. He is a WPO competitor and at the 2005 Arnold Classic he squatted a huge 1058. Marc has been competing in powerlifting for 6 years and has used the IPA, APF, USAPL and the WPO to showcase his strength. He currently owns Total Gym in South Carolina. Despite his appearance, Marc is a very well educated man as he holds two degrees from the University of South Carolina; one in finance and one in economics. His best lifts include a 1058 squat, 700lbs bench press and a 722 deadlift. His best total to date is 2463.

Al Caslow
Al is currently ranked #1 in the world in the 165 pound class. He holds the highest squat of all time in the 165 pound class (886 pounds), and also holds the second highest total of all time at 165 pounds with 2100. His first powerlifting competition took place in April 2006. He plans to continue competing in heavier weight classes, as well as in different federations with different gear restrictions. He shares his gym, Society Of Strength, with 11 other individuals, and also trains in Omaha with Big Iron Gym. He resides in a suburb of Kansas City with his wife Katie and daughter Sofia.

Adam Driggers
Adam Driggers is 38 years old and has been lifting for 14 years and competing for 10. He’s currently training to squat 1000 pounds at 198, and wants to press 700 at 198 and pull 700 at 198. At his last meet, Tampa Barbell Invitational, he totaled 2210, for a five-pound meet PR total. Adam trains at his home, Team Samson Powerlifting.

Ano Turtiainen
Ano competed in the IPF (242 weight class) between 1989 – 1996. In 1993, he won the European Championships and in the same year got silver in the Worlds. Since 1997, he has competed in the WPC 275 pound weight class. He won the European Championships on three occasions and also has four World Championships under his belt. Since 2001 he has been competing mainly in the WPO, winning the 2002 Final, heavyweight class. Ano’s best lifts are: squat 1080, bench 678, deadlift 894 and a total of 2491 pounds.
Ano also owns Metal Gym and the Metal Sport and Wear company that supplies gym equipment and powerlifting gear. In his little, but lively, family belongs Minna, and his daughters Mimmi and Doris. Ano is also interested in motor-sport and spends his spare time with his family in the country side.

Brian Carroll
Brian has been a competitive powerlifter since 1999, when he broke into the sport with bench-only competitions. In 2004, within a year of his first full power meet, he finished second at the WPC Worlds in the open class as a junior – totaling 2000 pounds. Since then, Brian has recorded numerous top-two finishes, including the WPC Worlds, WPO Finals, APF Seniors and the IPA Pro-Am. For the past six years, Brian has consistently added 90+ pounds to his total each year, going from 1752 to 2700 over this span. Brian is employed as a licensed massage therapist in Jacksonville, FL. He enjoys coaching lifters, guiding their training and watching them succeed. Brian’s best lifts in the 275 class include a 1145 squat, 785 bench and 800 deadlift.

Brian Schwab
Brian has the all time highest total of 1930 lbs in the 148 lb. class and is a WPO champion in the lightweight division. His total for the 148 lb class was ranked number one on Powerlifting USA’s top 100 list for 8 consecutive years. He won the 148lbs. class in the first Bench America contest and is recognized as one of the most consistent powerlifters in the world. Brian competes equipped as well as raw (his raw total was ranked #2 in the nation in the 148 lb class in 2009 with lifts of a 501 lb squat, 325 lb bench, a 550 deadlift, and a 1377 lb total). Brian holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences from the University of Florida and is a CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) with the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association). He owns and operates Orlando Barbell (www.orlandobarbell.com)–a 24 hour card access gym that is powerlifter friendly. His best lifts in the 148 lb. class are a 765 pound squat (five times bodyweight), the highest 148 pound class full meet bench of 565 pounds, a 606 pound deadlift and the all time highest total of 1,930 pounds. He has now moved up to the 165 pound class where his best lifts include an 825 lb squat, a 622 lb bench (the 3rd highest of all time), a 628 pound deadlift, and a 2045 lb pound total (the 3rd highest total of all time in the 165 lb class).

Chad Aichs
Chad is a world class and elite powerlifter in the SHW division. He began training seriously for powerlifting in 1999 in Sparks, NV, where he still currently trains at American Iron Gym. In the ten years since he started, Chad has proven to be one of the strongest lifters in the world. Chad’s best lifts are a 1173 squat, 821 bench press and a 755 pull. His best total is 2733 and which makes him one of the top lifters of all time. Chad has held all the AWPC shw world records at the same time and holds the WPO three-lift bench press record. Along with his impressive lifting credentials, Chad also wants to show he still has some athletic ability and is a competitive and ranked Scottish highland games athlete!

Chad Smith
Chad Smith is the owner and Head Performance Coach at Juggernaut Training Systems in Laguna Hills, CA. A two-time NAIA champion in the shot put, Chad boasts a PR of 19.46m (63-10.25) which ranked him 4th among US born collegiates and in the the top 20 of all US men for the 2009 season. At Juggernaut, Chad trains athletes from the Professional ranks to junior high and youth athletes, in a wide variety of sports. He also has several years of experience coaching high school football and track & field. After competing in his first powerlifting meet in October 2010 where he squatted 800 pounds raw, Chad has quickly risen through the ranks of powerlifting and is currently the number 1 ranked raw American lifter in the 308s weight class with a 2165 total and is the American Record holder in the squat for the 308s with a 905 pound effort. Clint Smith
Clint graduated from the University of Florida in 2003, and now works in Jacksonville, Fla., as a civil engineer. He became a competitive powerlifter in 2005. Since then, his total has increased from 2060 to 2485 pounds. His current best lifts are 935 squat, 805 bench press and 755 deadlift in the 242 pound weight class. Dave Kirschen
Dave began powerlifting competitively since 1998, and has since reached totals of 1901 in the 181 pound class, and 1925 in the 198 pound class. He trains at Eastside Barbell club in Palisades Park, New Jersey and currently manages a fitness center in New York City. Steve Goggins
In 2003, Steve Goggins recorded one of the most impressive squats of all time: 1102lbs at just over 260lbs. He had several world records and won the Heavyweight Champion of the WPO four times. His best bench is 600 and his best pull is 881. Steve has competed in just about every federation and has been involved in the sport since 1979.

Hannah Johnson
Hannah is an elite level powerlifter with a 1200lb total (450/300/450) in the 148lb class. She has also competed in figure competitions and won a Harley Davidson Spokesmodel Bikini contest. She has worked with a wide range of clients including athletes, the obese and the elderly. She is the owner of TotalBodyTurnaround, LLC Fitness Bootcamps and Personal Training. Hannah also owns a vehicle shipping company, where she works with the international port system to send government vehicles overseas. She currently trains with her fiance Matthew and is simply referred to as “The MINX.”

Jason Pegg
SGT Jason Pegg was stationed with the 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne division of the United States Army in Fort Bragg, NC. On his third deployment to a combat theatre in 2005, in western Afghanistan, he sustained a serious arm injury from an IED (roadside bomb). As a result, he spent 18 months at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, including three months as an inpatient. Two and a half years after not being able to squat 315 pounds with a safety squat bar, Jason has squatted 900 pounds, deadlifted 700+, and has a PR of 565 in the bench.

Jim Wendler
Jim was a strength and conditioning coach at the University of Kentucky where he worked with several different teams including football and baseball. He played football and graduated from the University of Arizona where he earned three letters. Jim’s best lifts include a 1000 pound squat, a 675 bench press, 700 pound deadlift and a 2375 total in the 275 pound class. He is the author of several books including 5/3/1: The Simplest and Most Effective Training System for Raw Strength. He recently turned his training to unequipped powerlifting meets and increasing his conditioning. Jeremy Frey
Jeremy brings to the team a world of hands-on experience. He played football in high school and rugby in college, all the while pursuing powerlifting on the side. Today, in addition to being the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at a Division III college, he has become a serious, competitive powerlifter. In fact, Jeremy was the 2005 Junior Division APF Senior Nationals Champion, as well as that year’s WPC Junior Division World Champion. Jeremy is has a passion for helping teach others along with an ability to motivate and inspire those around him. His philosophy is straightforward: “Success comes from learning from those who have been there, by doing it yourself, and having an understanding that you can always learn something new.” In the November 2005 WPC World Championship in Helsinki, Jeremy turned in the following performance in the 220 lb. junior division: squat, 788 lbs.; bench, 501 lbs.; dead lift, 661 lbs.

Jo Jordan
Ranked top 10 in the 242 pound weight class, Jo Jordan has achieved an elite total with best lifts of a 970 pound squat, 650 pound bench, and 720 pound deadlift. In the 275 pound weight class, he has squatted an amazing 1003 pounds. Jo won the 2008 AAPF Nationals in the 242 pound class, and took second place at the 2008 WPC World Championships. In 2007, he captured the 242 pound class title at the AWPC World Championships. Married with three daughters, Jo earned a bachelor’s degree in Recreation from the University of Florida and is currently a certified personal trainer through NESTA. He resides in Orlando, Fla., and trains at Orlando Barbell.

Joey Smith
Joey Smith is currently one of the top 275 lb & 308 lb.-class bench pressers in the world. In 2007, he has made both a 500 lb. raw bench press and a 730 lb. shirted press in competition both in 275 weight class. On June 19, 2011 Joey benched 765 lb shirted press in competition at 282 body weight. When it comes to enthusiasm and excitement, as well as a desire to help others, Joey is among the most ambitious lifters today. With 16 first place and five second place competition finishes under his belt, Joey’s 10 years of training has paid off. Over the years, has worked with some of the greatest lifters in his home state of North Carolina. In business, he’s the Circulation Manager for two North Carolina newspaper and also serves as a fitness trainer for his local YMCA,10 seasons as a YMCA soccer coach, and owns his own gym NEBO BARBELL. At present, Joey is ranked 21st in the U.S. and 24th in the world for the 275-lb. All-Time Bench Records list (June 2007).

Josh McMillan
Josh is from Michigan with a professional powerlifting total in the 275 pound weight class. In his most recent meets he benched a personal record 780 pounds, Squated 865 lbs, and deadlifted a personal best of 804 pounds. Matt Rhodes
Matt is a tremendous resource for our readers by bringing that hard-to-find mix of both real-world coaching and athletic experience. Not only did Matt play football at the University of Arizona (1996-98), he also worked as a strength coach at the University of Richmond and was an intern at the University of Pittsburgh for the accomplished Buddy Morris. Matt now lives in Greenwich, Connecticut, and works as a personal trainer. While Matt entered the sport of powerlifting in 2001 at 220 pounds (6’ 4”), he now tips the scale at over 300 solid pounds and has squatted 880, benched 550 and deadlifted 750 pounds— earning Best Lifter designation in the 308 weight class at the APF Imperium in May 2006. Although the path has not been particularly easy for Matt because of Marfans Syndrome, his resolve is strong and he has the will to be a winning athlete.

Molly Edwards
Molly Edwards is a personal trainer from Grove City, Ohio, and a graduate of Defiance College. In her first powerlifting meet, she totaled 1120 (415/275/430), which is 100 pounds over an elite total for the 165 pound class. Scott Yard
Scott Yard is a 2004 graduate of Western Maryland College. As an equipped lifter Scott has broken the all-time world record total for the 275-lb class. This was done at the age of 23. His 2605-lb total consists of a 1050 squat, 840 bench, and a 715 deadlift. Scott’s 840 bench at one time was the heaviest recorded bench to date in a full meet across all weight classes. Scott currently competes raw. To date he has posted Personal meet bests of 750 in the squat, 505 in the bench, and 755 in the deadlift. Scott trains out of Club Natural Gym in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and hopes to compete for many years to come. By day he is a forensic Social worker in the corrections field.

Ted Toalston
Ted Toalston is a 30 year-old a warehouse supervisor from Columbus, Ohio. At 5’9”, 190, with a 1590 total under his belt (565/425/600) at his first powerlifting meet in January 2009, Ted’s goal is an elite ranking in the 198 pound class. Vincent Dizenzo
Vincent Dizenzo began competing as an amateur full meet lifter in the 220 pound class. Two ruptured discs caused him to focus on the bench press and eventually become a top-ranked bencher. His best bench is 820 pounds in the 308 class. He has a raw bench of 605. Vincent won Bench America and has competed in the Arnold Classic. He has also competed in strongman competitions.

Christian Carter
Christian Carter is the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Illinois State University and has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology. As the strength coach, he implemented training programs for 11 of their sport teams. Those teams range from football to women’s gymnastics and anywhere in between. On top of that, he also consults with a wide range of clients on their training and/or diet goals online. Christian is a competitive bodybuilder that has and will continue to compete in powerlifting meets during his off-season. His two-year goal is to reach professional status in natural bodybuilding and qualify for the raw unity in powerlifting.

Jen Comas
Jen Comas is a NPC Bikini competitor who wants to try her first raw powerlifting meet in 2011. She is a personal trainer, teaches Spin, yoga (currently learning the Ashtanga series) and Body Pump. Matt Kroczaleski
Matt made quite a statement at the 2006 Arnold Classic. Lifting in the 220lbs class, Matt squatted 926, bench pressed 660, and deadlifted 755 and came away with the win. A cancer survivor, Matt has overcome many obstacles on his way to becoming one of the most dominant forces in powerlifting today. Michael Keck is a world class competitive raw power lifter, after setting a new IPA world record at the February 6, 2010 Lexen Xtreme Pro-Am in the 242 division. Amy Wattles is a seasoned strongwoman and highland games competitor. Amy has been competing in strongman competitions for six years and highland games for two. In 2010 Amy won the North American Highlander Association (NAHA) National Championship in Omaha, NE. Amy is the Idaho State Chair for NAHA. In 2008 Amy competed in World Strongwoman Championship (formerly World’s Strongest Woman) in Poland.

Clint Darden
Clint Darden earned his Pro Card in Strongman in 2003 in the USA and moved to Cyprus in 2004. He competed in the USA, as well as throughout Europe representing both the USA, as well as Cyprus on the International Level. Steve Pulcinella
Steve Pulcinella has been passionately strength training since he was 13 and competing in strength athletics ever since the age of 14. Shaun Mirjavadi
Shaun Mirjavadi is heavyweight fighter, standing 6-foot at 245 pounds. His early fights in Michigan were unsanctioned events in bars. In Oregon, he fought in a couple of different organizations, but mostly the Full Contact Fighting Federation, or FCFF, where he won the heavyweight title there twice. When he moved back to Michigan, he fought for Impact Fight League. He fought at the Palace at Auburn Hills, main event for the Heavyweight title and won that back in December of last year.

CJ Murphy

Dr. Ryan Smith received his undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology from The Ohio State University. A veteran of the US Armed Forces, The Thinker has coached physical preparation and T&F at the BCS and high school levels. He has edited certain publications, as well as the soon to be published final work, of the late Dr. Yuri Verkhoshansky. He has lectured extensively on the subject of physical preparation and his application of former Soviet and Eastern Bloc sport training methodologies as well as the work of the late Canadian sprint coach Charlie Francis. Thomas graduated from Penn State University in 1985 with a B.S. in biology with a physiology concentration. In 1988, he graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic with a D.C. degree. In 1998, Thomas achieved his first ART certification in upper extremity work. Since then he’s achieved certification in all course work through level three (biomechanics).Thomas worked on the Ironman Triathlon treatment staff 6 times in 1998-2001, and has also been part of the Arnold Classic medical staff.
